My Father was on a $25.00 a month disability and he used to ride the Illinois Central railroad caboose car with cattle buyers taking their cattle to Chicago. In Chicago he would buy a used car and take it back to Hills saving whatever the freight bill was at the time.
A car like this that he probably purchased for under $200 was used for the down payment of the 240 acre farm one mile west of Hills. The seller was a bachelor named Ole Ellingboe.
Upon my Mother’s death in 1976, the farm sold for @2000 an acre.
